Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in 2026

Google AI Overviews are the short, AI-written answers Google places above the classic blue links; AI Mode is the fuller conversational version where Google answers a question end to end and lets you follow up. Both are assembled on the fly from Google's live index and what it already knows about entities, then written into a response that cites a small set of sources. Appearing inside one of these answers is not the same as ranking first, and it runs on overlapping but distinct signals. This page explains how Google builds these answers and the honest levers that make a business more likely to be named. If the whole idea is new, start with what AEO is.

The surfaces

AI Overviews and AI Mode, defined

Two different surfaces, both generative, both built from Google's index. It helps to keep them straight before talking about how to appear.

01

AI Overviews

A short AI-written summary Google shows at the top of an otherwise normal results page. It condenses what Google found across several pages and links out to a few of them. It appears for some queries and not others, and the same search can show one for one person and not for the next.

02

AI Mode

A separate, conversational search experience where Google answers a question directly and lets you keep asking, instead of handing back a page of links. It draws on the same index and grounding but produces a fuller, multi-part answer, and can break a complicated question into pieces it researches before replying.

03

Being named vs ranking

Ranking wins you a blue link in the list. Being named wins you a mention or recommendation inside the generated answer, usually with a citation. A page can rank well and still be left out of the answer above it, and a page ranking lower can be the one Google chooses to quote.

Under the hood

How Google assembles an answer

An AI Overview is not pulled from a fixed database of approved businesses. Google retrieves, grounds, and writes it each time, which is why the levers that matter are about being retrievable and clear rather than gaming a rank.

Retrieval from the index

Google starts from its live web index, the same one behind ordinary search. A page that is not indexed, or is blocked from Googlebot, cannot be pulled into an answer at all. Being retrievable is the floor everything else stands on.

Grounding and corroboration

Google ties the generated text back to real indexed pages and leans toward claims that more than one trusted source supports. A fact stated only on your own site, and echoed nowhere else, carries less weight than one repeated across the sources Google already trusts.

Entity recognition

Google decides whether your business is a known, distinct entity with a clear name, location, and set of services. When the entity is confirmed, it can attach your services and credentials to an answer with confidence. When it is unconfirmed, you tend to get skipped.

Business Profile for local

For local and near-me questions Google leans on Google Business Profile. Your category, service area, hours, and reviews feed the local AI answer directly, so an incomplete or inconsistent profile quietly keeps you out of it.

Non-deterministic output

The model rewrites the answer each time, so results shift between users, sessions, and small changes in wording. There is no fixed position to hold. You are improving the odds of being named, not locking a rank you can point to.

Overlap and divergence

Where this overlaps with classic SEO

Most of what earns a normal Google ranking also makes you eligible for an AI answer, because both start from the same index. Crawlable pages, clear on-page content, genuine authority, and a healthy technical setup are the price of entry for either one. If classic SEO already has your pages indexed and trusted, AI Overviews are working from the same source.

The divergence is in what gets you chosen once you are eligible. Blue-link ranking rewards keyword relevance, links, and page experience. Being named in an AI answer rewards content a model can lift cleanly, an entity it can identify without guessing, and claims corroborated by the third-party sources it trusts. You can hold a strong ranking and still be absent from the overview sitting above it, which is why AEO treats the answer, not the position, as the thing to win. You can see how we work through that in the method.

For local businesses the overlap runs through Google Business Profile. The same profile that shapes your map pack presence feeds Google's local AI answers, so keeping category, service area, hours, and reviews accurate and consistent pays off in both places at the same time.

Levers

Honest levers to appear

None of these guarantee a mention, because the output is non-deterministic. They move the odds by making you retrievable, extractable, and unambiguous to the system doing the reading.

Be indexed and trusted

You cannot be quoted from a page Google has not crawled or does not trust. Keep priority pages indexable, fast, and free of accidental blocks, and earn the third-party mentions that mark you as a real, credible source.

Make content extractable

Answer the actual question near the top of the page, in plain declarative sentences a model can lift without interpretation. Clear headings, direct definitions, and specific facts beat clever phrasing when a machine is doing the reading.

Sharpen the entity

Give Google one consistent name, location, and description of what you do across your site, your schema, and the profiles it cites. Organization and FAQ schema are not required for an answer to be generated, but they remove ambiguity about what Google is reading.

Keep Business Profile consistent

For anything local, complete and maintain your Google Business Profile and make sure its details match your website. Consistency across the two is what lets Google name you in a local answer with confidence.

Do not accidentally opt out

The tags that suppress your search snippets, a nosnippet directive, a max-snippet of zero, or blocking Googlebot, also remove you from AI Overviews. There is no separate opt-in for the AI answer, so unless you genuinely want to disappear from Google's results, leave those settings off.

These are the same levers our free scanner checks and the method works through. If you want the vocabulary around citations and generative answers, read the GEO explainer, then run a scan to see whether Google names you today.

Definitions

Key terms.

AI Overview

A short, AI-generated summary Google displays above the classic results for some queries, written from indexed pages and linking to a few cited sources.

AI Mode

Google's conversational search experience, where it answers a question end to end and supports follow-ups instead of returning a list of links.

Grounding

Tying an AI answer back to real indexed sources so the generated text reflects retrievable, corroborated content rather than the model's memory alone.

Entity clarity

How confidently Google can identify your business as a distinct, verifiable thing with a known name, location, and services, which decides whether it can name you in an answer.

Questions

Common questions.

Do AI Overviews replace Google's blue links?

No. An AI Overview sits above the normal results, which are still there below it. It appears for some queries and not others, and it can vary from one person to the next. Being cited inside the overview is a different outcome from ranking in the links, and you can achieve one without the other.

Can I stop my site from appearing in AI Overviews?

The controls are the same ones that remove your ordinary search snippets: a nosnippet directive, a max-snippet of zero, or blocking Googlebot. There is no separate switch that only affects AI Overviews, and using these also drops you from normal snippets. Most businesses are better off staying eligible.

Does schema markup get me into AI Overviews?

Schema is not required for Google to generate an answer, and adding it does not force a mention. What it does is sharpen entity clarity and make your facts easy to extract, so Google is more confident about what it is reading. Treat it as a clarity tool, not a guarantee.

Does an llms.txt file help me appear in Google's AI answers?

No. Google ignores llms.txt. It has no effect on AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google builds those answers from its normal crawl and index, so the work that matters is making your real pages retrievable, extractable, and clear.

How does Google Business Profile affect local AI answers?

For local and near-me questions Google leans on Business Profile data, including your category, service area, hours, and reviews. A complete, accurate, and consistent profile makes you eligible to be named in a local AI answer, while gaps or mismatches with your website tend to keep you out.
